The NBA's Jason Collins made his life-changing announcement yesterday. Collins is the first openly gay athlete from a major American sports team. The May 6th issue of Sports Illustrated will have the full story.
The Boston terrorist incident induced him to make the call. NBA Commissioner David Stern gave him a thumbs up...so did superstars Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. Co-host of "Live with Regis and Michael" Michael Strahan and former President Bill Clinton tweeted support.
But....Miami Dolphins wide receiver Mike Wallace probably has the dubious honor of being the first jock to say some homophobic about Collins. He tweeted, "All these beautiful women in the world and guys wanna mess with other guys?" 30 minutes later he deleted the comment and offered somewhat of an apology. Not sure that changes his opinion any.
