DA Fitzpatrick Retires. . . Sort Of

Syracuse, N.Y. - A double-dipping district attorney says he’s doing it to protect his family.

Onondaga District Attorney Bill Fitzpatrick is poised to make nearly $300,000 a year after filing his retirement papers with the State.  He isn’t actually retiring. He is just beginning to cash in on his pension.

Fitzpatrick told reporters outside court this week that he is doing it protect spousal benefits. If Fitzpatrick were to die before taking his pension, his wife would not be eligible for his pension. His wife is Court of Claims Judge Diane Fitzpatrick.

As DA, Fitzpatrick has a salary of more than $182,000 his pension should be more than $100,000.
