Syracuse police were again able to turn a traffic stop into an arrest and the recovery of a weapon.
Officers say they stopped a Chevy van with just one working headlight on Ellis Street, but the vehicle sped off to elude the stop. They observed someone in the van throw out what appeared to be a rifle just before a male passenger bailed out of the vehicle on Westmoreland Avenue. The male driver stopped shortly afterwards and attempted to fight with officers to avoid arrest, but he was taken into custody. The officers recovered the rifle, identified as a Mossberg 12 gauge shotgun.
The suspect was identified as 35-year-old Willie Strong of Liverpool. He was charged with the felonies of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree, Assault of a Police Officer, misdemeanors of reckless driving, aggravated unlicensed operation in the third degree, and several traffic tickets.He was taken to the Justice Center to await arraignment. Police say the passenger was not apprehended.
