A new threat to children comes from the world of identity theft, which the governor's office warns is spreading through New York.
The state's Division of Consumer Protection says victims of child-identity theft may not even know that they've been victimized - until they apply for a loan or credit card, or rent their first apartment. If a scam artist gets hold of a child's personal information and social security number, they can obtain credit cards and make purchases on them. It could leave a child with a damaged credit report for years. The state recommends that parents check their child's credit report annually.
