(Onondaga County, NY) Sheriff Kevin Walsh says he's not releasing the names of any Onondaga County gun owners and is denying a request from emerges. com for two reasons. First, he says thousands of opt-out forms submitted by gun owners who want to keep their information private have yet to be processed. He doesn't want to release information on a permit holder who's opted out of having his personal information publicized, in accordance with the NYS Safe act.
Secondly, Sheriff Walsh says he can't be sure that emerges.com, which sells information to retailers, will keep its promise not to use gun owners' private data for solicitation.
Walsh says processing those forms requires resources he doesn't have and takes a back seat to other more important priortities. The NYS Safe act says the form allows gun permit holders to keep their personal information private from solicitors and the news media. Sheriff Walsh says this is the first FOIL request his department has received.
