SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) _ A 22-year-old Syracuse-area man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for the beating death of a 2-year-old girl.
Sharif Hamilton was convicted of first-degree manslaughter in connection with the December death of the toddler, who died a few days later after being taken off life support. Prosecutors say the girl was injured after Hamilton shook her and threw her into her playpen to stop her from crying. He then tripped over her, causing them both to fall down some stairs, with him tumbling over the little girl several times. She also struck her head on the wall of a bathtub.
Court papers said she was bleeding from the nose and her knees were wobbling before he finally called for help. Hamilton was living with the child and her mother.
