Police say one of two people hurt in an explosive fire at Canastota's wastewater treatment plant has died.
Officials say Richard "Rick" Whitney of Bernhards Bay was a steamfitter working for a subcontractor at the plant last week when the accident occurred. Whitney received third-degree burns over most of his body and died at a Boston burn center. The village hired a contractor to renovate its wastewater treatment plant, who in turn hired the subcontractor that brought Rick Whitney to Canastota. Village officials say the fire was ruled accidental, and that the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident.
